BIPOC Mental Health Month- Support from a Birmingham, AL therapist

Minority Mental Health Awareness highlights the intersectionality of race and mental health. Together these topics focus on the connection between barriers and disadvantages that have created unique experiences for Black, Indigenous, and People of color (BIPOC) and impacted their psychological, emotional, and behavioral well-being. BIPOC individuals have increased risk factors and unique considerations that reflect mental wellness, including but not limited to complex trauma, discrimination, systemic racism, underrepresentation in BIPOC providers, stigmas, and lack of access to quality healthcare. The movement behind BIPOC Mental Health Month is to support and advocate for culture, community, and connection to advance mental health care and increase the availability of culturally appropriate, inclusive, and affirming services.

Culture emphasizes the systemic foundations such as traditions, language, cultural values, and survival practices of BIPOC. Community celebrates the power of support from those within the BIPOC populations and allies through cultural celebrations, advocacy, activism, and mutual aid. Lastly, connection is working together to access necessary resources, training, and expertise to improve the quality and effectiveness of care. Through education and advocacy, it is possible to achieve mental health equity and increase positive outcomes of BIPOC. This post is to aid in the prioritization of social progress and offer resources to learn, connect, and promote growth in our community. The list below is full of resources that support safety in catering to your mental health and/or supporting BIPOC issues surrounding mental health.
