Hello!

I’m Mackenzie, a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate at Sharp Wellness supervised by Dr. Lisa Grubbs, Ph.D., LPC-S. I like to think of myself as your greatest ally, someone who will get down in the mud with you and help you pull yourself out of it. I help adolescents and adults navigate our unpredictable world and learn how to love themselves in the process.

My mission is to cultivate a space in which you feel safe to come as you are and discover your authentic self. I view therapy as an ongoing, collaborative process in which we will establish and revisit goals together. I utilize a trauma-informed lens when examining client issues and believe that the past can provide insight into the present. While I have experience working with clients of a variety of ages and backgrounds, I am particularly passionate about providing LGBTQIA+ affirmative care and supporting those with high levels of anxiety.

  • Affirming Ally

As a queer therapist, I combine my lived experience with my training to provide the most affirming care possible. Research consistently shows that individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community experience higher rates of mental health symptoms compared to the general population, and affirming therapy is key in reducing these symptoms. Even if you aren’t in the LGBTQIA+ population, you’ve likely experienced the feeling of being an outsider in a group of people before and could benefit by having these experiences affirmed. Let’s talk about it!

  • Trauma-Informed

You’ve likely seen the word trauma pop up lately in the conversation surrounding mental health…but what is it? The word trauma can sound intense, but it’s actually more common than you think. I like to think of trauma as a deeply distressing experience that has lasting impacts on your well-being. Together, we can unpack those experiences and understand the way they are impacting you today. Don’t panic; we won’t go there right away. It is my priority that you feel safe before we dive in.

  • Normalizing Your Needs

At the end of the day, we are all humans trying to navigate what it means to be on this floating rock together, including me! In the therapy room, I want you to feel like you can express all aspects of your existence with me — even the shameful and embarrassing ones. I am an advocate for normalizing all aspects of living because they’re happening to us all, even if no one is talking about them. Let’s break down the conditions put upon us by society together and make self-compassion a daily practice.

  • More About Me

Outside the office, you’ll find me having a cozy night at home with my cats, watching the latest episode of [insert romance reality show here]. I also love hitting the gym in the morning while listening to a silly podcast by my favorite bands or drag queens. My other hobbies come and go in phases, including crocheting, embroidery, puzzles, and, of course, trying to read for pleasure again after being in school my entire life!

"Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we'll ever do."
